ANTHONY WILLIAMS FROM UPPER HOLLOWAY SENTENCED AFTER DRUG-DRIVEN SEXUAL ASSAULT IN STEVENAGE AND LONDON

On November 2, 1992, a disturbing case unfolded involving Anthony Williams, a 34-year-old man from Upper Holloway, who was convicted of heinous crimes against a young girl in Stevenage and London. The incident revealed a pattern of predatory behavior compounded by drug abuse and violence, culminating in a lengthy prison sentence for Williams.

According to court reports, the victim was a 13-year-old girl who, along with her friend, encountered Williams in Stevenage on November 1 of the previous year. The prosecutor, Mr. Timothy Probert-Wood, detailed how Williams approached the girls and inquired if they had any 'puff,' a colloquial term for drugs. The girl responded by offering to show him where they could obtain some illicit substances. Subsequently, both girls entered Williams' Volvo, where they found two other men waiting inside, indicating a group involved in drug activity.

After an unsuccessful search for drugs within Stevenage, Williams drove the group into London. During the journey, they stopped in a dark alleyway where Williams smoked crack cocaine through a homemade pipe. The court heard that Williams then blew the smoke into the girl’s mouth, an act that was part of his drug consumption ritual. This act was followed by Williams engaging in sexual activity with the girl at a friend’s flat, an assault that was facilitated by the influence of drugs and manipulation.

Williams continued his reckless behavior by taking the girls to another location, where he bought more crack cocaine at Kings Cross. The group then proceeded to yet another flat, where Williams again took the girl into a room, closed the door, and secured it with a chair. Inside, he administered more crack 'blow backs'—a term used to describe inhaling crack cocaine and then blowing the smoke into another person’s mouth. The court described how Williams undressed the girl and engaged in sexual intercourse with her, despite her attempts to leave. The entire ordeal lasted into the early hours, with Williams driving the girls back to Stevenage at around 5 a.m.

Later that month, Williams was arrested and eventually confessed to having consensual sex with the girl. The court also recounted an earlier incident on May 25 of the previous year, when police spotted Williams driving erratically in York Way, Kings Cross. He was found with his Doberman dog and smelled of alcohol. When asked to take a breath test, Williams refused and became aggressive, resisting arrest and refusing to release his dog. Reinforcements had to be called in to restrain him, and during the process, Williams attacked a police constable, smashing the officer’s handcuffs into his face, causing cuts, bruises, and a chipped tooth.

Williams, who was unemployed and residing at Partington Close, Upper Holloway, admitted to charges of unlawful sexual intercourse, supplying cocaine, and assaulting a police officer. His criminal record was extensive, including previous convictions for burglary, drug possession, car theft, assault, and criminal damage. Notably, he had served a six-month sentence in 1987 for unlawful sexual intercourse, with a subsequent suspended sentence for the same offense a year later.

Judge Israel Finestein, QC, sentenced Williams to a total of 12 months in prison, emphasizing the importance of protecting young girls from such predatory behavior. The judge stated, ‘One of the purposes of the law is to award some protection to young girls,’ underscoring the gravity of Williams’ actions and the need for strict punishment to serve as a deterrent.
