MAN WITH VIOLENT PAST CONVICTED FOR BRUTAL ASSAULT ON SON
Anthony O'Connell, known for a criminal record involving violence, carried out a vicious assault on his son following a family meal.During the attack, he struck his son multiple times, bit his nose, and used a walking stick to strike him further.
The assault was so intense that the injured victim, who has mobility difficulties, managed to escape and seek assistance from a neighbor.
Court records revealed that O'Connell had prior convictions, including one for assault causing actual bodily harm, along with nine other convictions encompassing 11 offenses since 2017.
These included an incident where he bit his brother during an attack and a battery against his daughter in 2021.
Approximately one month later, O'Connell took part in a street robbery involving another man and an unrelated stranger.
During that incident, he used his stick to pin a victim to the ground and held it against his throat.
At the court hearing, O'Connell claimed in his defense that he was not responsible for the assault, stating, 'I promise I didn't do it,' though he ultimately pleaded guilty to assault and was convicted.
The judge characterized the assault as 'irrational and prolonged,' highlighting O'Connell's history of violence, and sentenced him to 28 months in prison to run concurrently with his existing sentence.
The victim's statement conveyed his estrangement from his father and accused O'Connell of 'brainwashing' him into believing domestic violence was acceptable or normal.
