ANTHONY NAGLE FROM BALLYMACTHOMAS SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE IN CORK

In a case that has shocked the community of Ballymacthomas and the wider Cork area, Anthony Nagle, a 48-year-old man, was sentenced to a total of two years in prison for the sexual exploitation of a 15-year-old girl. The incident took place on the night the girl received her Junior Cert results, a moment typically associated with celebration and relief, but which was marred by Nagle’s criminal actions.

Anthony Nagle, who resides on Nicholas Square in Ballymacthomas, appeared before the Circuit Criminal Court in Cork to face charges related to his misconduct. The court was informed that the victim, a young girl, had been out celebrating her academic achievement in September 2005 when Nagle, a friend of her mother, invited her back to his flat under the pretense of collecting some DVDs. Instead, what transpired was a series of disturbing events that would have lasting repercussions.

According to court records, Nagle purchased cigarettes and 24 bottles of WKD alcohol for the girl. After consuming the alcohol, the situation escalated into sexual activity, during which Nagle engaged in sexual acts with the teenager. The court further heard that Nagle proceeded to film the girl during these acts, creating an explicit videotape that was later discovered by authorities. The tape was found in a safe at Nagle’s residence, clearly labeled with the girl’s name and the date, indicating premeditation and a disturbing level of planning.

The incident came to light when the girl’s mother, worried because her daughter had not returned home at the expected time, called Nagle. He reassured her that her daughter was likely still out celebrating her results. However, when questioned by police, Nagle admitted that his true motive was to have sex with the girl, revealing a disturbing lack of remorse and a blatant disregard for her well-being.

Further details emerged when the girl’s mother discovered a letter written by her daughter, describing what she remembered happening that night. The girl was unable to confront her mother directly, indicating the trauma she endured. The court was told that Nagle had a history of alcohol abuse, was suicidal, and had been a victim of child abuse himself. Despite these factors, Nagle showed no genuine remorse during the proceedings.

In his defense, Nagle claimed that he was heavily intoxicated at the time and believed the girl was over the age of consent. He did, however, apologize to her during the court hearing. The judge, Patrick Moran, took into account Nagle’s guilty plea and the fact that he had provided evidence by giving a statement. Nonetheless, the court recognized the severity of the crime, noting that the girl had been subjected to a harmful experience involving various sexual activities, which were recorded and stored in a safe.

As a result, Judge Moran sentenced Nagle to two years in prison, with the final 12 months suspended. Additionally, Nagle’s name will be entered on the Sex Offender’s Register for a period of ten years, reflecting the serious nature of his offenses and the need for ongoing monitoring to protect the community from potential future harm.
