Derby Rapist
In a disturbing case that has resurfaced decades after the initial crimes, Andrew Tighe, a man from Derby, has been convicted and sentenced for new allegations of sexual abuse involving two victims who have recently come forward. The victims, both now adults, endured their ordeals as children and have spoken out about the lasting impact the abuse has had on their lives.
One of the victims, who was first assaulted on his ninth birthday, revealed that the trauma has cast a shadow over every subsequent birthday, making him dread the annual recurrence of that day. He expressed feelings of being haunted by the abuse throughout his entire life, stating, “Because it happened for the first time on my birthday I now dread it every year it comes around. I wish that I could skip that day every year it happens. I feel the abuse has held me back from achieving my goals in life. The abuse I suffered has haunted me my entire life.”
The second victim, who was befriended by Tighe when he was just 11 years old over CB radio—a popular communication method at the time—also shared his emotional scars. His statement, read out in court, indicated that he has felt like a victim all his life, which led him down a troubled path. He said, “I feel like I have been a victim all my life. I took the wrong path in life as a result of what he did to me and I continue to suffer emotionally.”
Details of the case reveal that Tighe, aged 56, of Sunnyhill, Derby, had a prior conviction in 2001 when he was sentenced to 13 years in prison for similar crimes against four other victims. He was released on license in 2008 but continued to pose a threat, as evidenced by the recent allegations. The two new victims only recently felt able to come forward and report their experiences, which had been kept secret for many years.
During the court proceedings, Judge Shaun Smith QC highlighted the severity of the abuse. He recounted that the younger victim was coerced into touching Tighe sexually on numerous occasions over a span of approximately 20 months, starting when he was nine and continuing until he was 11. The judge detailed how Tighe took the boy to his home, threatened him, and warned him that if he disclosed the abuse, he would face harm.
The second victim’s account involved a relationship initiated through CB radio, where Tighe befriended him. The judge explained that Tighe invited the boy to his residence, where he provided alcohol and cigarettes. The victim recalled being touched and kissed, and on one occasion, waking up to find himself being raped while intoxicated.
Judge Smith emphasized that if the abuse had been known at the time of Tighe’s initial sentencing in 2001, his punishment would have been more severe. Tighe pleaded guilty to multiple counts of sexual abuse against both victims and was subsequently sentenced to six years in prison. The court’s decision reflects the gravity of his actions and the ongoing harm inflicted upon his victims.
