The incident came to light after Smith engaged in an explicit online conversation with an individual he believed to be a 13-year-old girl, but who was actually an undercover police officer.

According to court reports, Smith thought he was communicating with a young girl named 'Ava' on a website called TeenChat. Over a span of three months, he maintained frequent contact with this fictitious persona across multiple platforms, including TeenChat, Skype, and Kik messaging app. During these exchanges, Smith, who was working as a PCSO in the Stockport area but was based in Levenshulme, disclosed personal information and sent explicit images of himself.
