During the proceedings, Sheriff Peter Braid expressed skepticism about Lothian’s account of events, stating that his evidence appeared to be “largely made up as he went along.” The court heard from forensic scientist Mandy Bath of Police Scotland, who testified that Lothian’s DNA was found on the outside and inside of the boy’s underwear. Ms. Bath emphasized the significance of this finding, stating that there was a one-in-a-billion chance that the DNA profile did not belong to Lothian, strongly indicating sexual contact between the two.
