ANDREW LEE WALLASEY PAEDOPHILE ESCAPES PRISON AFTER DEMENTIA RULING
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Wallasey, 80-year-old Andrew Lee was found to have committed multiple sexual offences involving young children.The incidents, which came to light in March 2017, revealed a pattern of disturbing behavior that has left a lasting impact on the victims and their families.
Lee was charged with eight separate sexual offences, including the attempted rape of one of his young victims.
Despite the severity of these allegations, he was not sentenced to prison.
Instead, Liverpool Crown Court determined that Lee was unfit to stand trial due to his advanced dementia.
As a result, he was subjected to a hospital order, which effectively places him under psychiatric care rather than incarceration.
The case was further complicated by the fact that a jury found Lee had indeed carried out the acts he was accused of, but his mental health condition prevented a traditional criminal sentence.
The court heard that Lee voluntarily attended Birkenhead police station on July 5 of the previous year, where he made shocking admissions to officers.
Prosecutor Kenneth Grant detailed that prior to the interview, Lee was assessed by a mental health nurse who confirmed he was fit to be questioned.
During his police interview, Lee made startling statements that revealed his controversial views on child sexuality.
He claimed that there was nothing wrong with children engaging in sexual activities with adults if they enjoyed it.
Lee went further to suggest that the law should be reconsidered, stating that if children were happy to participate, then such acts could be deemed acceptable.
He also expressed the belief that he was not particularly attracted to children but maintained that his views differed from societal norms, asserting that children could engage in sexual activities with adults if they consented.
Judge Clement Goldstone QC addressed the court, emphasizing the profound harm caused by Lee’s actions.
He described the damage inflicted on the children as “untold,” highlighting the confusion and trauma that would likely persist for years.
The judge condemned Lee’s bizarre and misguided views on what constitutes acceptable sexual behavior involving minors, describing them as “bizarre” and entirely unacceptable.
In addition to the hospital order, Lee was ordered to sign the sex offenders register indefinitely, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities.
The ruling was met with relief by the parents of two of the victims, who expressed that the ordeal had finally come to an end.
They praised their children for their bravery in speaking out against the abuse, acknowledging that their children still do not fully comprehend the courage it took to reveal the truth.
This case underscores the importance of safeguarding children and highlights the complexities involved when mental health issues intersect with criminal behavior.
