A former school janitor from the Orkney Islands, Andrew Charles, has narrowly avoided imprisonment following a disturbing case involving illicit online communications with underage girls.The revelations came to light after a vigilante paedophile group exposed his inappropriate conversations, which had taken place over the internet.
Andrew Charles, aged 63, was previously employed at Evie Primary School but is no longer working there due to the scandal.
His offending behavior led to his temporary homelessness, as he was placed in emergency accommodation after the authorities uncovered his online activities.
On Wednesday, during a court session at Kirkwall Sheriff Court, Andrew Charles was sentenced to a three-year community payback order.
The court mandated that he complete 300 hours of unpaid community service as part of his punishment.
Additionally, he was prohibited from having any unsupervised contact with individuals under the age of 16, except in unavoidable circumstances.
Furthermore, the court imposed strict conditions on his internet activity.
Andrew Charles is now legally barred from deleting any browsing history or online activity, and he must permit police and social workers to examine any electronic devices such as phones, laptops, or other internet-enabled gadgets to ensure compliance with the law.
He has also been placed on the Sex Offenders Register for a period of three years, a measure intended to monitor and manage his potential risk to the community.
Despite the severity of the allegations, the court's decision reflects a focus on rehabilitation and monitoring rather than incarceration.
