ANDREW BELL FROM CHILTON AND COUNDON SENTENCED AFTER SEX WITH 14-YEAR-OLD GIRL IN SHOP BACK ROOM
In a case that has drawn significant attention, Andrew Bell, a 31-year-old man residing in Anson Walk, Coundon, was sentenced in connection with a serious sexual offence involving a minor. The incident took place in the town of Chilton, where Bell was employed at his father’s shop. The court proceedings revealed disturbing details about the events leading up to his conviction.According to the prosecution, Christopher Williamson, Bell had developed a friendly relationship with a 14-year-old girl who was a visitor to the shop. Over time, their interactions grew somewhat closer, with the court noting that Bell, who was 30 at the time, and the girl had shared two or three kisses. The relationship appeared to have been relatively innocent at first, but the situation escalated on June 1 of that year.
On that day, the girl entered the shop in Chilton, and Bell responded by locking the door behind her. He then led her into the back room of the shop, where he engaged in sexual activity with her. The girl subsequently left the premises and returned home. It was six weeks later that she reported the incident to the police, prompting an investigation into Bell’s actions.
During police questioning, Bell admitted to having had intercourse with the girl. He acknowledged that he was aware she was under 16 but claimed he did not realize she was as young as 14. Bell also stated that he had only locked the shop door to ensure privacy and insisted that this was the only occasion on which they had sex. Despite this, the girl continued to visit the shop after the incident, raising further concerns.
Bell faced multiple charges, including rape, but a formal not guilty verdict was entered on that particular count. His defense, led by Jamie Hill, argued that the girl had become infatuated with Bell and that witnesses testified she appeared older than her actual age, suggesting she looked around 17 or 18. Hill also claimed that Bell, who had no prior criminal record, had succumbed to temptation after the girl made advances towards him.
Judge Anthony Briggs acknowledged the gravity of Bell’s actions, emphasizing that such offences against minors of this age are serious and typically warrant imprisonment. However, in this case, he decided to suspend the nine-month prison sentence for two years, considering the circumstances. The judge also ordered Bell to be placed under a supervision order for the same period and mandated his registration on the Sex Offenders’ Register for ten years. Judge Briggs concluded by stating, “Girls of this age need protecting, sometimes from themselves,” underscoring the importance of safeguarding minors from exploitation and harm.
