ALEXANDER ORD FROM NEW HARTLEY JAILED FOR 16 YEARS AFTER BRUTAL SEX ATTACKS IN NORTHUMBERLAND
In a disturbing series of crimes that shocked the community of Northumberland, serial sex offender Alexander Ord, aged 24, from New Hartley, has been sentenced to 16 years in prison following a conviction for multiple heinous attacks on vulnerable women. The offences, which spanned over three years, included three counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, all committed against women who were either asleep or heavily intoxicated at the time. One of the most shocking incidents involved a 42-year-old mother who visited her daughter’s house in April of the previous year. Although she was not invited, Ord arrived unannounced. The woman, who had consumed a significant amount of alcohol, was helped upstairs and laid to rest in her daughter’s bedroom. As the night progressed and everyone else had left, Ord managed to sneak back into the house. Prosecutor Rupert Doswell explained that the woman awoke to the sensation of someone on top of her, feeling semi-conscious and disoriented. The following morning, she was aware that her daughter was lying next to her in bed, but the attacker had already left the scene. It was revealed that Ord had returned after initially leaving, had entered the house without permission, removed his shoes, and gone upstairs with clear intent to commit further crimes.
The victim described the profound impact the assault had on her and her family. She stated, “I’ve lost two-and-a-half stone and didn’t work for two months. My eldest daughter is struggling immensely, has taken several overdoses and has self-harmed. My son has been attending weekly counseling sessions and has been significantly affected.” She expressed her heartbreak over her daughter’s distress, saying, “My daughter couldn’t cope with the thought of her mother being raped beside her in bed as she slept. I pray that with help, she can recover and not let this man ruin her future. I’m proud of myself and the other victims. We should walk with our heads held high and sleep peacefully, knowing he can’t hurt anyone else in the immediate future.”
Another victim, a 28-year-old woman, recounted her ordeal from 2012. She had been socializing at a house with her partner and others, including Ord. After going to bed with her boyfriend, she was shocked to wake up and find Ord on top of her. Mr. Doswell explained that she had fallen asleep and awoke to find Ord engaging in sexual intercourse with her, pretending to be her partner. When she realized her actual partner was next to her, she pushed Ord off. The offender then moved down the bed and left the house, laughing. The following day, Ord returned by letting himself into her home and lying in wait for her. She found him on her bed and reported that he also attempted to contact her via Facebook afterward. The woman described how this traumatic experience led to panic attacks and heightened anxiety, stating, “This was solely down to what he put me through. He dragged me through a lengthy court case. His actions have had a massive impact on my life.”
The case also involved a 15-year-old schoolgirl who attended a house party in 2013. After drinking alcohol and taking drugs, she went upstairs to lie down. She quickly fell into a deep sleep and later woke to find Ord on top of her, with her onesie untied. She shared her emotional struggles, saying, “The memory of that night will creep up and I hit rock bottom again. I began to self-harm and took overdoses. When he was convicted, I cried because I was so happy he had to face the consequences of his actions.”
In 2014, Ord’s criminal behavior extended to the home of a 22-year-old mother after a night out. Following some consensual kissing, he forcibly assaulted her, ignoring her pleas to stop, by holding her down and raping her. She described the lasting emotional scars, saying, “I’ve been significantly affected emotionally and get flashbacks and nightmares about what happened. This happened in my own home, a place I previously felt safe. I haven’t been able to return there because I can’t face the trauma.”
After a trial at Newcastle Crown Court, Judge Deborah Sherwin sentenced Alexander Ord to 16 years in prison, with an extended license period until 2036. He was also ordered to sign the sex offenders register and was placed under a sexual harm prevention order. The judge emphasized the vulnerability of the victims, stating, “You deliberately targeted women who were either under the influence of alcohol or asleep. In all cases, the victims were particularly vulnerable, being affected by drink or sleep, and in places where they should have felt safe.”
