ALEXANDER MCDONALD'S BRUTAL MURDER IN NORTON FITZWARREN LEAVES COMMUNITY SHOCKED
Alexander McDonald, a 27-year-old man from Norton Fitzwarren, was found guilty of committing a heinous murder at his family home on September 30, 2014. The tragic incident involved the killing of his mother, Catherine McDonald, who was 57 years old at the time. According to court proceedings, McDonald launched a violent assault on his mother while she was peacefully sleeping in their residence. The attack was characterized by extreme brutality, with McDonald using multiple weapons, including a kitchen knife, a knitting needle, and scissors, to inflict fatal injuries. It was revealed that McDonald was under the influence of substances during the attack. He had previously consumed alcohol at a wine-tasting event held at his workplace, which was followed by the use of cocaine. The combination of alcohol and drugs appeared to have significantly impaired his judgment and emotional stability. Court testimonies also indicated that McDonald had been engaged in sexually explicit texting with a male friend shortly before the assault, which seemed to have contributed to his heightened emotional state at the time.
During the attack, McDonald wrapped a power cable around his mother’s neck twice and tightened it, ultimately causing her death. After the murder, he attempted to cover his tracks by cleaning the scene. He then stole her bank card and her car in an apparent effort to escape. His attempt to flee was short-lived, as he crashed the stolen vehicle near Tiverton, Devon. Authorities responded swiftly, and McDonald was apprehended shortly thereafter.
In sentencing, Mr. Justice Dingemans described the crime as “an example of the destruction caused by the use of drugs in society.” The court sentenced McDonald to a minimum of 30 years in prison. Throughout the proceedings and sentencing, McDonald displayed no visible emotion. The judge emphasized that even after serving his sentence, there would be no guarantee of his release, highlighting the severity and brutality of the crime committed in Norton Fitzwarren.
