ALEXANDER CURRIE FROM CORNTON SENTENCED IN STIRLING FOR DECADES-OLD ABUSE CASES
In a case that has spanned several decades, Alexander Currie, a 78-year-old man from Cornton, Stirling, was sentenced to a year in prison for heinous sexual offenses committed in the late 1950s and later in the 1990s. The court proceedings revealed a disturbing history of abuse that began in 1958, when Currie was just 39 years old.According to the details presented at Stirling Sheriff Court, Currie initiated his pattern of predatory behavior by assaulting a young girl aged ten and her six-year-old sister. The court heard that Currie, who was then in his late thirties, committed the first of these offenses while the children were in his home. He was described as having groped one of the girls as she watched him shave in his bathroom, an act that marked the beginning of his long history of sexual misconduct.
The court further learned that Currie later engaged in inappropriate acts with the same children, including simulating sexual acts with the six-year-old girl while she was lying in bed with her sister on a Sunday morning, during a time when their family was attending church. These revelations painted a picture of a man who had exploited the innocence of young children over a period of years.
Remarkably, the abuse did not cease in the 1950s. Nearly four decades later, Currie was found to have committed further offenses when he assaulted a six-year-old girl. The incident came to light after the child's mother grew suspicious and contacted the police, leading to Currie's arrest. He admitted to the charges, acknowledging his guilt in the court.
At the sentencing hearing, Sheriff Robert Younger addressed Currie directly, taking into account his advanced age and declining health. He stated, “In view of your age and failing health I am sentencing you to one year’s imprisonment. That is less than your guilt on these charges would normally deserve.”
With his dementia and near deafness, Currie is now expected to become one of the oldest inmates in Scotland’s prison system. His case has shocked the local community in Cornton and Stirling, highlighting the long-lasting impact of his actions and raising questions about the safety and oversight of vulnerable children during the periods of his offending.
