MAN BRUTALLY ASSAULTED PREGNANT PARTNER LEAVING HER WITH STOMACH BRUISE
Alan Wharton, aged 37, subjected a woman to a period of abuse at her residence in Glasgow’s Riddrie from September 2022 through September 2025.His pattern of violence involved multiple assaults, including hitting her repeatedly on the head and body, as well as choking her.
As a result, she sustained various injuries, notably a bruise on her stomach while she was pregnant.
Wharton appeared before the court one year after being acquitted of a separate incident in which he fractured a man’s facial bones with a single punch at a social club in Newcastle.
At that time, he was serving a suspended sentence for a prior battery conviction and was ordered to pay £5,000 in compensation to his victim.
He admitted to a charge of engaging in a course of domestic abuse.
The court was told that Wharton and the woman started their relationship in September 2022, and he moved in with her shortly after.
She described Wharton as a cocaine user whose drug use contributed to his violent behavior on a weekly basis.
His jealousy made her feel isolated, leading her to reduce contact with friends and family.
She became pregnant in November 2023.
However, in July 2024, they traveled together to Greece, where an argument subsequently occurred.
Prosecutor Danielle McGuinness said: “Wharton choked her out on the balcony.
“On another holiday, while on the plane, Wharton bit her on the arm.” On another occasion at her mother’s home, Wharton struck the woman on the head which caused a large wound and left a scar.
The woman’s friend spoke to her about not seeing her as often.
She told her friend that Wharton had been physically violent to her and did not want people to see her injuries.
The victim sent her friend pictures of her injuries, which included a swollen face and lip, a burst nose, black eyes as well as grazes to her elbows.
Ms McGuinness added: “There was also a swollen black eye, bruises to her neck, a wound to her forehead and a bite mark to her arm.
“There was also a bruise on her pregnant stomach.” At a wedding attended by the victim, her friend, and Wharton, the friend confronted Wharton but he denied wrongdoing.
On a later occasion, Wharton grabbed the woman’s face and applied pressure to it which caused swelling.
The woman wanted to end the relationship and went to a police station.
However, she was tailed by Wharton in his car who swerved and attempted to overtake her.
Wharton approached the vehicle with a can and car seat which he left on the road.
That same day, the victim’s friend reported welfare concerns to police and told officers about Wharton’s violence.
The woman was reported safe at her mother’s home.
She did not want to provide a statement to the police but just wanted Wharton away from her own home.
An initial trace for Wharton was unsuccessful and it was believed he had travelled back to Newcastle.
On October 13 2025, police arrested Wharton at BAE in Glasgow’s Govan.
Wharton claimed that the woman was a “drunk” and came about her injuries due to her intoxication.
Sentence was deferred pending background reports by Sheriff Joan Kerr who remanded Wharton in custody meantime.
