AIDAN NUGENT FROM NEWRY CHARGED WITH SEXUAL ASSAULTS AFTER MIAMI TRIP
Aidan Nugent, a 30-year-old man from Cullyhanna Road, Newtownhamilton in County Armagh, has appeared before the courts in connection with serious allegations of sexual assault. The charges stem from an incident that allegedly took place on November 17, 2024, during a trip to Miami, United States, which was organized as part of a celebration following Armagh GAA's victory in the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship held in July 2024.Mr. Nugent was brought before Armagh Magistrates’ Court, which is located in Newry, on a Tuesday morning. He faces four serious charges related to the incident involving a woman. These include two counts of sexual assault and two counts of causing a person to engage in sexual activity without their consent. The allegations have sent shockwaves through the local community, especially given Nugent’s previous involvement as a captain of the Armagh GAA team.
During the court proceedings, a detective constable provided testimony indicating that authorities believe they can link Nugent to the charges. The officer explained that initial contact with the complainant was made on November 19, 2024, two days after the alleged incident, and subsequent police contact with Nugent occurred on December 10. Nugent was formally interviewed by police on March 31 before being formally charged on April 14. Throughout the proceedings, Nugent, dressed in a light blue jumper, navy trousers, and trainers, confirmed his identity and date of birth, and he acknowledged that he understood the nature of the charges against him.
It was also revealed during the hearing that Nugent maintains his innocence, asserting that during police interviews, he claimed that “only sexual activity that occurred was consensual.” His legal representative stated that Nugent denies all allegations and maintains his innocence. The court was informed that police bail would continue under the condition that Nugent has no contact with the complainant. The case has been scheduled for a further mention in court on June 3, 2024.
The incident in question is linked to a trip to Miami that took place after the Armagh GAA team’s triumph in the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship. The trip was part of the celebrations following their victory, which was a significant achievement for the team and the county. The allegations against Nugent have cast a shadow over the celebrations and have raised questions about the conduct of those involved in the trip. The case continues to develop as authorities gather more evidence and prepare for the next court hearing.
