ADRIAN REES FROM CWMLLYNFELL INVOLVED IN BRUTAL ATTACK IN AMMANFORD

A disturbing case of domestic violence unfolded in Ammanford on the night of December 23 last year, involving Adrian Rees, a 31-year-old man from Cwmllynfell. The incident began after Rees returned home intoxicated following a Christmas work party, and it quickly escalated into a violent assault against his girlfriend.

According to court reports, Rees, in a heavily intoxicated state, started provoking his partner by challenging her to a fight shortly after arriving at their residence. The situation rapidly deteriorated as he launched a series of aggressive attacks, delivering full-force punches with both fists. His violence did not stop there; he also bit her lip, as well as her head and thumb, in a brutal display of aggression. The assault intensified when he forcefully threw her against a wardrobe, causing visible damage.

Adding to the chaos, Rees responded to the unexpected arrival of his teenage son by headbutting a wardrobe and ripping its doors off, further demonstrating his uncontrollable rage. The assault only ceased when the woman's teenage son entered the room, prompting her to seize the opportunity to escape. She fled the scene and sought refuge at a friend's house, where police were subsequently called to the address.

When law enforcement officers arrived, they found Rees still present at the scene. He exhibited signs of violence, including bloody knuckles, and damage to walls and doors was evident throughout the property. Rees was detained and taken into custody. During questioning, he chose to give a 'no comment' interview, refusing to speak about the incident.

The woman sustained multiple injuries, including bruises around her eyes, on her chest and arms, as well as bite marks. She underwent an X-ray examination, which confirmed that she had no fractures or broken bones. In her impact statement, she expressed feelings of guilt and shame, revealing that she has been struggling with sleep issues since the attack. She also shared that her son now checks on her most nights, highlighting the emotional toll the incident has taken on her.

The property damage was extensive, with the landlord estimating repair costs exceeding £3,000. Repairs included fixing four doors and addressing 17 holes in the walls caused by Rees’s violent outburst. Rees pleaded guilty to charges of assault causing actual bodily harm and criminal damage.

Rees’s criminal history is extensive, with a record that includes ten convictions for 31 separate offenses. His past convictions involve violence and harassment, notably including two previous convictions for assaulting partners. One such incident involved grabbing a victim by the throat and pushing a finger into her eye, while another involved biting and buttocking a victim. His history underscores a pattern of violent behavior and disregard for restraining orders.

During the hearing, Rees’s barrister highlighted his long-standing struggles with substance abuse, specifically mentioning issues with alcohol, cocaine, and high-strength cannabis. The defense argued that Rees is seeking help to overcome these problems in hopes of becoming a better father.

Prosecutor Sian Cutter described the incident as a 'relentless and sustained attack,' emphasizing Rees’s violent tendencies when under the influence of alcohol and drugs. The judge, Geraint Walters, sentenced Rees to 20 months in prison, with a one-third reduction for his guilty plea. Rees will serve up to half of this sentence before being eligible for release on licence. Additionally, he is subject to a three-year restraining order that prohibits any contact with his former partner.

Judge Walters remarked that violence and harassment towards women seem to be ingrained in Rees’s behavior, noting that he 'completely lost it' during the incident, which involved unrestrained violence, including biting and headbutting. The court’s decision reflects the seriousness of the assault and the need to protect victims from further harm.
