BURY ST EDMUNDS MAN JAILED FOR CHILD SHAKING CAUSING LIFELONG INJURIES
A 37-year-old man named Adam Andrews from Raynsford Road, Great Whelnetham, near Bury St Edmunds, has been sentenced to three years in prison after he was convicted of shaking a baby, which resulted in the child being left blind and completely paralysed. The incident occurred on June 28, 2018, when the victim was only 21 days old.
Although Andrews was previously found not guilty of intentionally inflicting grievous bodily harm in 2022, he was convicted of a lesser charge of grievous bodily harm without intent.
During the court proceedings at Ipswich Crown Court, Judge David Pugh described the injuries inflicted as caused by 'violent shaking.' The prosecution highlighted that Andrews showed 'absolutely no remorse' since the incident over four years ago.
The child's mother provided a powerful statement, explaining that her son is now blind and paralysed, requiring constant 24-hour care, and will never walk or talk.
She described his condition as involving numerous seizures daily and being filled with medical equipment rather than toys, emphasizing the lifelong impact and her fears of outliving her child.
The court's sentence reflects the severity of the attack, with Andrews being jailed for three years, and his actions described as 'spontaneous loss of control' by his defense.
The case underscores the tragic consequences of violent shaking, with the judge condemning the act and the mother expressing her heartbreak and concern for her child's future.
