AARON COLLIS FROM MELBOURN: SHOCKING CHILD SEX OFFENDER CASE IN CAMBRIDGESHIRE
In February 2014, a disturbing case emerged involving Aaron Collis, a man with a troubling history of sexual offenses against children in Cambridgeshire. Collis, who hails from Melbourn, has become a focal point of concern following revelations about his ongoing desire to undergo chemical castration as a means to prevent future offenses.Collis, aged 28 at the time, previously worked at two nurseries in Cambridgeshire—namely, the Snap! Nursery located on Chapel Street in Chesterton and the Funky Fun House play centre situated on Mercers Row in Abbey. Despite his employment at these childcare facilities, there was no evidence suggesting any misconduct occurred within his workplaces, nor was he ever left unsupervised with children at either location. The crimes he committed were entirely separate from his professional environment.
His criminal history is extensive and deeply troubling. Collis was first sentenced in 2009 to a five-year term after admitting to a series of sexual offenses, including the abuse of five young girls, one of whom was only 18 months old. His crimes involved indecent assaults, taking indecent photographs of children, and other related offenses. The case was uncovered when Collis loaned a video camera to a neighbor, Jason Dobney, who discovered footage depicting Collis abusing a young girl. This revelation led to his arrest and subsequent conviction.
Following his sentencing, Detective Sergeant Andrea Warren from Cambridgeshire Police expressed her concern, stating, “Aaron Collis’s actions have caused heartache and misery for the parents of his five victims. I can only hope that his sentence can bring some closure for the families involved.” Collis was also placed on the sex offenders register for life, underscoring the severity of his crimes.
In March 2012, Collis appeared before Cambridge Crown Court once again, this time pleading guilty to 12 additional offenses committed between 2002 and 2009. These offenses involved four girls aged between three and eight, and he also requested that 13 other charges against 13 children—comprising four boys and nine girls—be taken into consideration. The new charges included nine sexual assaults, one indecent assault, and two counts of taking indecent photographs. His previous sentence was an indeterminate one with a minimum of five years, but the new convictions extended his incarceration, and he was sentenced to an additional five-year indeterminate term. He will remain in custody until authorities determine he no longer poses a risk to the public.
Throughout his incarceration, Collis has expressed a desire to undergo chemical castration—a procedure involving the administration of anti-androgen drugs designed to diminish libido and sexual activity. In a letter published in the prison magazine Inside Time, Collis described his frustration with medical professionals who have tried to dissuade him from this course of action. He stated, “I find it nearly impossible to convince people that chemical castration is the best thing for me and it’s my best hope of an offence-free future.”
He further explained, “I am only speaking for myself because I know my own mind, I know my triggers, and I know that the Sex Offender Treatment Programme alone is simply not going to lower my risk. I’ve spoken to doctors, nurses, psychologists, OMU, and various medical ‘experts’ about the possibility of being chemically castrated, but to no avail. I thought they would jump at the chance to take away my sex drive, but I was very wrong.”
Collis emphasized his belief that this decision is his right, stating, “It’s my body and my messed-up brain which is dangerous, and this is my decision. I’m still doing prison courses, but I wish people would respect that I am an adult and that it’s my body.” He also declared his intention to pursue legal action if necessary, even threatening to take his case to the European Court of Human Rights. He added, “I will be a free man in a few years, and this is a huge factor in how bright my future will be.”
His case continues to draw attention due to the severity of his crimes and his persistent advocacy for chemical castration as a preventative measure. The community and authorities remain vigilant, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding children and ensuring that justice is fully served in this troubling case from Cambridgeshire.
