MAN JAILED AFTER SUSTAINED TWO-HOUR ASSAULT LEAVES WOMAN WITH LIFE-ALTERING INJURIES
A 39-year-old man from Dublin has received a prison sentence of three years and six months after committing a lengthy and brutal assault on a woman inside her Westmeath home.Aaron Cole, residing on Jamestown Avenue in Inchicore, Dublin 8, appeared before Mullingar Circuit Court and admitted to causing harm through assault.
Court proceedings revealed that the assault extended over roughly two hours and resulted in the victim being covered in blood from head to toe.
The woman explained that she met Mr Cole online in the weeks following her breakup from a long-term relationship.
She was unaware of any familial ties between him and her former partner.
Mr Cole had shared that he was adopted and had limited knowledge of his biological relatives beyond close kin.
On the night the attack occurred, after a recording session and while intoxicated, she invited him to her father’s house in Westmeath.
When he arrived, he made a comment referencing her ex-partner, telling her, “You do realize I’m Gary’s uncle.” She questioned the remark, which he dismissed as a joke, claiming he saw it on Facebook.
Believing it was said in jest, she allowed him inside.
However, within hours, the situation turned violent.
The court described that in the early hours, as her phone rang, Mr Cole became aggressive and accused her of trickery, then began physically assaulting her.
During the attack, he reportedly told her multiple times, “It’s your time to go,” “Those kids deserve better,” and “Remember your kids’ faces,” with each utterance followed by violence.
Detective Garda Aidan Hynes described the scene as covered in a significant amount of blood across the floor, walls, and furniture.
The victim was headbutted, punched, kicked, and struck repeatedly, with the assault continuing even as she lost consciousness at times.
Judge Keenan Johnson commented that it was “extremely fortunate” that Gardaí arrived when they did, noting that the attack could have been much worse had it persisted.
She was taken to Tullamore Hospital and later transferred to St.
James’s Hospital, where she endured numerous injuries including a fractured nose, jaw fractures on both sides, damaged teeth, cuts around her right eye, nose, and upper lip, extensive bruising, soft tissue injuries, and a minor head injury.
She required intensive treatment, surgery to stabilize her jaw, facial sutures, blood transfusions, pain relief, and antibiotics.
Eight months later, she continued to experience pain and facial scars.
In her victim impact statement, she described waking up in hospital feeling numb and detached, later requiring psychiatric support and living with PTSD triggered by the assault.
Mr Cole’s sentence was set at three years and six months; the judge emphasised that such a serious offence could not warrant a suspended sentence.
He is expected to be released in November 2026 and may be deported to Manchester.
Reflecting on the attack, the victim stated, “I didn’t know who he was.
I didn’t know there was any connection.
I had just left a long relationship and was vulnerable.
I will never forget what he said while he was beating me — ‘It’s your time to go.’ ‘Those kids deserve better.’ Every time he said it, he smashed my face.” “It’s 2026 now and I still see it.
I still hear it.
The physical injuries heal, but the fear stays with you.”
